President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said Saturday all concerned government agencies are on full alert as Typhoon Uwan (international name Fung-wong) intensifies and approaches Northern Luzon.
In a statement, Marcos also urged the public to remain calm but stay vigilant, emphasizing the importance of preparedness to minimize the potential adverse effects of the typhoon.
“Patuloy nating binabantayan ang pagtindi ng Bagyong Uwan habang papalapit ito sa Hilagang Luzon (We continue to monitor how Typhoon Uwan intensifies as it approaches Northern Luzon),” he said.
“Naka-full alert ang lahat ng ahensya ng pamahalaan at agad kumilos upang matiyak ang kaligtasan ng ating mga kababayan (All government agencies are on full alert and have taken immediate action to ensure the safety of our fellow citizens).”
Marcos advised the public to heed safety advisories from local government units (LGUs) and continue to monitor weather updates.
“Sumunod sa mga abiso ng inyong LGU at agad lumikas kung kayo ay nakatira sa delikadong lugar. Ihanda ang inyong mga pangunahing pangangailangan at manatiling nakatutok sa mga opisyal na anunsyo (Follow the advisories of your LGU and evacuate immediately if you live in a dangerous area. Prepare your essential needs and stay tuned to official announcements,” he said.
Unity is key to everyone’s safety, he said, noting that complacency has no room as “every second counts.”
The President said the Department of Transportation and Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board have deployed buses and trucks to facilitate the evacuation of individuals who may be affected by the typhoon.
He added that the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Public Works and Highways, Armed Forces of the Philippines, and Philippine Coast Guard have positioned rescue vehicles, lifeboats, and relief goods in areas likely to be affected.
Toll fees have been suspended for emergency convoys and responders, and special lanes have been designated to allow faster access to high-risk areas, he added.
Marcos said the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and local governments are also clearing waterways and removing obstacles from roads.
He said some malls and buildings have also opened their parking areas to residents in frequently flooded areas.
Uwan, located 680 km. east of Borongan City, Eastern Samar, or 760 km. east of Catarman, Northern Samar, is moving westward at 35 kph, packing maximum sustained winds of 140 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 170 kph.
Uwan is forecast to rapidly intensify and may reach super typhoon category either by Saturday night or Sunday, the weather bureau said in its 11 a.m. weather advisory, noting that faster intensification cannot be ruled out due to a favorable environment. (PNA)
