The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA)–Cordillera honored overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their families during the regional Migrants’ Day celebration on Monday, recognizing their sacrifices and vital contributions to the country’s economy.
“This celebration is dedicated to our OFWs and their families, who endure the emotional burden of separation to give their loved ones a better life. We want to bridge the distance created by working abroad,” OWWA-Cordillera Administrative Region Regional Director Martel Dasayon said at the event held at the Baguio Convention Center.
Dasayon, himself a son of an OFW, spoke of the quiet struggles that only fellow OFW families truly understand.
He highlighted that in 2024 alone, OFWs contributed USD38 billion to the Philippine economy, according to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.
Dasayon also recalled their unwavering efforts during the Covid-19 pandemic, saying, “When the world stood still, it was the OFWs who kept it moving.”
The event featured check awards to OWWA scholars, the release of livelihood funds to organized OFW families, and free services such as medical check-ups, massages, haircuts, and grooming.
Over 300 OFW families from across the region attended and participated in cultural presentations, raffle draws, and games.
Dasayon said the government continues to improve OFW welfare through the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW).
He cited the establishment of OFW lounges at airports and a seafarers’ hub in Metro Manila to provide rest and support.
He also highlighted ongoing efforts to secure bilateral and multilateral agreements to ensure OFWs’ rights are upheld in host countries.
Through outreach programs like “Parokya ng OWWA,” the agency also brings its services to remote areas in the Cordillera to ensure no OFW family is left behind. (PNA)
