The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) assured its commitment to advancing women’s rights and welfare in observance of National Women’s Month 2026 (NWM).

DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian conveyed the department’s support for women empowerment during the kick-off program for the NWM at the central office in Quezon City on Monday.

This year’s theme is “WE (women and everyone) for Gender Equality and Inclusive Society.”

“Through our programs and services, we will continue to strengthen women’s capacities, expand access to protection and support services, and promote safe spaces that uphold dignity and inclusion,” Gatchalian said in a video message.

He said the DSWD recognizes the invaluable contributions of Filipino women as equal partners in nation-building and emphasized the vital role of women as pillars of the home, community and nation, who help unite society toward a brighter and more inclusive future.

“This year’s celebration reminds us that gender equality is everyone’s responsibility. It calls on women and men, youth and elders, families and communities to break barriers, challenge stereotypes, and ensure fair opportunities for all women and young girls,” he said.

The celebration also carries the sub-theme, “Lead the Babaylans, Filipinas!” that highlight women’s leadership as a fundamental part of Filipino identity, drawing inspiration from the time of the revered Babaylans, when women held influence and authority equal to men.

Women’s Month activities

In support of the administration’s call to honor women and promote gender equality, the DSWD has scheduled various activities in observance of the NWM.

To kick off the celebration, DSWD officials and employees wore shades of purple during the first flag-raising ceremony for March. The same practice will be observed every Wednesday and on designated special days of the month.

According to the Philippine Commission on Women, purple symbolizes justice and dignity.

The DSWD also organized several contests to encourage employee participation, including spoken poetry, mobile photography, Best Purple Outfit and Best TikTok Video contests.

Other activities at the DSWD central office are a livelihood bazaar featuring products from the Sustainable Livelihood Program, “Musika ng Kababaihan” (musical for women) on Fridays, and brown bag sessions highlighting women-related topics and advocacies.

Employees are likewise encouraged to take part in online campaigns #PurpleYourProfile and #PurpleYourIcon by updating their social media profile pictures using the official NWM celebration frame.

In observance of Women with Disability Day on March 30, the DSWD will pay tribute to women officials, employees and other workers with disabilities by recognizing their contributions to the department. (PNA)
