The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 9 (Zamboanga Peninsula) has released on Wednesday eight rehabilitated wildlife back to their natural habitat in Zamboanga Sibugay province.
The DENR-9 led the wildlife release activity in line with the celebration of the 2026 International Day for Biological Diversity on May 22, carrying the theme “Acting Locally for Global Impact.”
The eight rehabilitated wildlife released in Barangay Guinoman, Diplahan, Zamboanga Sibugay, include a reticulated python, a yellow-headed water monitor lizard, a Philippine serpent eagle, a Philippine hanging parrot or “Colasisi”, three white-eared brown doves, and a Brahminy Kite, also known as the red-backed sea-eagle in India.
The animals underwent rescue and rehabilitation and were assessed fit for release in a habitat determined suitable for their survival.
DENR-9 Executive Director Marie Angelique Go underscored the importance of collective action in protecting wildlife.
“Our actions at the local level —no matter how small they may seem—create ripples of impact that contribute to global biodiversity conservation. By protecting our wildlife and empowering our communities, we secure a sustainable future for generations to come,” Go said in a statement.
Alongside the release, a Communication, Education, and Public Awareness (CEPA) session was held with barangay officials and community members.
Go said the discussion covered wildlife protection, protected areas in Zamboanga Peninsula, and Republic Act 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act, emphasizing community roles in preventing illegal trade and habitat destruction.
Through this initiative, Go said DENR reaffirmed its commitment to environmental stewardship and called for continued collaboration among government agencies, local communities, and stakeholders to protect and conserve the country’s rich biodiversity.
“We are grateful that our village was chosen as the site for this meaningful activity. This not only raises awareness among our constituents but also reminds us of our shared responsibility to protect and preserve our natural resources,” Barangay Guinoman chairperson Reynaldo Centino said in a separate statement.
