The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-Central Luzon (BFAR-3) is continuously empowering the fisherfolk community in Aurora province.
In partnership with the Aurora Pacific Economic Zone and Freeport Authority (APECO) and the Municipal Agriculture Office, BFAR-3 conducted a technology caravan in Casiguran town last June 26-27 aimed at providing small and marginalized fisherfolk with sustainable livelihood projects.
BFAR-3 Regional Director Wilfredo Cruz said on Thursday some 100 fishermen took part in the techno caravan that featured various activities focused on aquaculture, fish processing and financial literacy training.
Cruz said the BFAR brought together experts and trainers to equip the fisherfolk of Casiguran with essential knowledge and skills.
He said the techno caravan served as a platform to promote sustainable fishing practices, enhance livelihood opportunities and strengthen the overall socio-economic fabric of the coastal community.
The aquaculture training sessions were particularly instrumental in educating the fisherfolk about the latest advancements and best practices in fish farming.
Cruz said participants were introduced to innovative techniques for fish breeding, feeding and disease management.
“Those insights will help the fisherfolk optimize their productivity while ensuring environmental sustainability,” he said in an interview.
On the other hand, the fish processing segment of the techno caravan taught the participants various methods to add value to their catch and maximize their profits.
He said the attendees learned about proper handling, storage and processing techniques, including smoking, drying and bottling.
“Equipped with these skills, the fisherfolk will be better prepared to tap into diverse markets and expand their income-generating potential,” he said.
Recognizing the importance of financial literacy in securing long-term prosperity, the BFAR also conducted Fish N’ Learn sessions on financial management.
Cruz said the fisherfolk were educated on effective budgeting, savings strategies and investment opportunities.
“The techno caravan represents our commitment to empowering the fisherfolk of Casiguran. By providing them with the necessary knowledge and skills, we are helping them enhance their livelihoods, protect the environment, and build a sustainable future for themselves and their families,” he added.
