Hundreds of residents in far-flung villages are now enjoying access to clean and reliable water from solar-powered water supply systems installed by the Ako Bicol (AKB) Party List in this city and Camalig town, both in Albay province.
In an interview on Thursday, Sally Luces, AKB media relations officer, said the program being implemented by AKB provides a sustainable and cost-effective solution to address the water problems in the region, particularly in the remote areas.
“The Taysan Elementary School in Taysan, Legazpi City and Barangay Tumpa in Camalig, Albay are the recent beneficiaries of the water system project of AKB. People in the areas will no longer fetch water or wash their clothes in the rivers. In addition, the solar-powered water facilities have the capacity to distribute adequate water to households,” Luces said.
She added that a similar ongoing project in Barangay Añog, Juban town in Sorsogon is expected to be turned over next month.
Meanwhile, the construction progress of the solar-powered systems in Barangays Coro-Coro and Libjo and at Tiwi Central School was recently inspected to ensure their timely completion.
“The three solar-powered water supply systems projects were more than 80 percent completed. These projects were made possible through the partnership of AKB Representative Elizaldy Co and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) which aims to provide clean and safe water to communities in need. AKB remains unwavering in its commitment to improving the quality of life for all Bicolanos,” Luces said.
In a statement, Co, who is chair of the House Committee on Appropriations, said they remain committed to the well-being of Bicolanos by expanding their solar-powered water supply system program.
“I believe that access to clean water is a basic human right that should be available to every citizen, regardless of their social status or economic background. That is why we at Ako Bicol Party-List are committed to bringing aid and assistance to our fellow Bicolanos through our Solar Powered Water Supply System program,” he said.
Co said clean water is needed for human survival, health and well-being. However, many communities in the Philippines, including the Bicol region, still face significant challenges in accessing clean and safe water, particularly in upland areas.
“Traditional water sources such as wells and springs are often contaminated with harmful bacteria, parasites, and other pollutants, posing serious health risks to residents. The solar-powered system has lower operating costs and minimal environmental impact compared to traditional diesel-powered pumps. This program is not only addressing the immediate water needs of communities but also contributing to the long-term sustainability of the region’s water resources,” he said. (PNA)
