The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Monday underscored the importance of strong Filipino families in promoting children’s well-being and building a better future.
The DSWD made the call during its flag-raising ceremony at the DSWD Central Office amid the observance of National Family Week 2026.
During the program, DSWD Operations Group Undersecretary Monina Josefina Romualdez reminded department employees of their role in strengthening Filipino families.
“Sa bawat empleyado ng DSWD, may bahagi ka sa pagpapalakas ng pamilyang Pilipino (To every employee of the DSWD, you have a part in empowering Filipino families). Whether you are for communities, handle programs operations, provide technical guidance, manage resources, or keep our offices running, what you do contributes to the work of the department, and ultimately to the families and children we serve,” Romualdez said.
She said this year’s theme — “Families, Equalities and Child Wellbeing: Pamilya, Pagkakapantay-pantay, at Kapakanan ng Bata” — highlights the link between family well-being and a child’s ability to grow and build a brighter future.
Romualdez also reaffirmed the DSWD’s commitment to empowering families through its social protection programs, including the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP), and Parent Effectiveness Service (PES).
“As the country’s lead agency for social protection, the DSWD helps create conditions that allow Filipino families to move forward through our program and services. We respond to different needs, and provide assistance to those facing difficult circumstances,” Romualdez said.
Under Presidential Proclamation No. 60, signed in 1992, the last week of September is designated as Family Week to promote nationwide awareness of the importance of family solidarity.
One of the highlights of the observance is “Kainang Pamilya Mahalaga Day,” which encourages families to spend time together over a shared meal.
In support of the observance, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. issued Memorandum Circular No. 136 declaring a half-day work suspension starting 1 p.m. on Sept. 28 in all agencies and instrumentalities of the national government, including government-owned or -controlled corporations and state universities and colleges.
The measure allows government workers to participate in “Kainang Pamilya Mahalaga Day” and spend time with their families. (PNA)
