The Department of Social Welfare and Development in Davao Region (DSWD-11) announced Monday that 150 children with disabilities in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur have been identified as pilot beneficiaries of Project Aruga.

The program seeks to detect disabilities early, connect children to appropriate services, provide disability support allowances, improve access to health and education, strengthen caregiving, and promote disability-inclusive communities.

In a press briefing here, Baby Jane Sarmiento, Project Development Officer II of DSWD-11’s Social Technology Unit, said beneficiaries were selected after home profiling, assessment, validation and deliberation by local project implementers.

“We give them cash assistance of PHP2,000 per month, released quarterly, to help with medicines, especially for children undergoing therapies,” she noted.

Services under Project Aruga include diagnosis and assessment, therapy referrals, case management, financial support, access to health, education, livelihood and skills development, family strengthening, psychosocial support, home and community assistance, and disability awareness activities.

Sarmiento added that 20 caregivers identified by the local government unit (LGU) have completed rollout training to assist children and their parents.

A peer support group for parents is also being organized to encourage sharing of experiences, mutual support, and emotional well-being.

She expressed hope that other LGUs will replicate the initiative as DSWD-11 works to expand the program across the Davao Region.

“Currently, we are scouting therapy centers to partner with us. We identified two in Sta. Cruz and three in Digos,” she said.

Project Aruga is implemented with the support of LGUs, including Persons with Disability Affairs and Local Social Welfare and Development offices. (PNA)
