About 1,455 Ilocos Norte government scholars, from senior high school level up to those taking up medicine and law, will receive next week a total of PHP18.5 million worth of stipend.
To cope with the increasing prices of basic commodities and living allowances, Carolyn Agcaoili, Education Research Assistant I of the Provincial Education Office, on Tuesday said stipend for college scholars is now pegged at PHP25,000 each per semester, while it is PHP10,000 each per semester for some of those who are in senior high school.
About 402 other senior high school scholars will receive PHP5,000 per semester, while about 12 scholars of doctors of medicine and nine juris doctor will get PHP25,000 each.
Ilocos Norte’s integrated scholarship program covers nine classifications that include those for students who excel in academics as well as arts; for those enrolled in agriculture and fisheries-focused programs, both in secondary and tertiary levels; youth leaders; those enrolled in technical and vocational courses; and those taking up medicine and law.
The provision of scholarship grants is a priority program of the provincial government to sustain academic excellence and reduce poverty through education.
“More slots are offered for students who may wish to pursue technology and vocational courses and agriculture-related fields,” Agcaoili said, citing these are needed in the job market. (PNA)
