At least 640 financially disadvantaged students in Baguio City will receive PHP20,000 each in scholarship assistance under the Bawat Barangay Makikinabang Program, funded through a PHP25.8 million allocation for the city.
Association of Barangay Councils (ABC) President and City Councilor Rocky Aliping said Tuesday that five students from each of the city’s 128 barangays will be selected as beneficiaries.
The city received the allocation from the Socio-Civic Projects Fund of the Office of the President through the Department of Budget and Management.
Aliping said each barangay received PHP200,000, with PHP100,000 allocated for community development projects and PHP100,000 for scholarships.
During his fifth State of the Nation Address on Monday, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said the program aims to encourage more young Filipinos to complete their college education by providing financial assistance to students in every barangay nationwide.
Under the program, barangays are encouraged to prioritize students at risk of dropping out or those nearing graduation who need financial support to complete their studies.
The initiative is among the national government’s assistance programs for local government units, alongside funding support for rice assistance and infrastructure projects. (PNA)
